Following last week’s announcement that Sir Nicholas Serota would step down as Director of Tate Galleries, William Hill has placed Tate Modern director Frances Morris as its favourite to take over leadership of the leading UK art institution.

Serota leaves Tate, following thirty years’ service garnering multiple plaudits for championing modern arts in the UK and successfully expanding Tate institutions outside of London including modern art museums in Liverpool and St Ives Cornwall.

Opening its ‘Tate Leadership’ market, William Hill has placed Frances Morris as 3/1 favourite to replace Serota. However, Morris who is considered a ‘world class’ art curator has recently taken on the leadership of the Tate Modern having been appointed this January.

Art insiders have questioned whether Morris has the political and commercial prowess to succeed Serota as Tate projects compete for future funding and sponsorship post Brexit.

Seeking a more experienced hand, Maria Balshaw the Director of the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester has been placed second market favourite at 7/2. Balshaw has impressed UK art directors, by revamping Manchester’s cultural arts programme.

Art strategist Iwona Blazwick, the long-serving director of the Whitechapel Gallery in East London is further considered a strong candidate for Tate leadership. Blazwick has an impressive track record in modern art consultation having advised UK and foreign governments on funding public and cultural arts projects. William Hill has placed Blazwick  as current market third favourite at 4/1.
